Come on board! Take a tour of the rescue cruiser of the DGzRS – German Maritime Search and Rescue Service
The BREMEN was commissioned in 1993. It is stationed inGroßenbrode and operates around the island of Fehmarn. It is named after the Hanseatic city on the Weser River, the headquarters of the DGzRS.
The 27.5-meter-class rescue cruisers are equipped with particularly extensive gear and facilities for maritime search and rescue (SAR) operations and boast impressive firefighting capabilities. They rank among the most capable SAR units, even by international standards. Coast guard cutters of this type are stationed at key locations along the German North Sea and Baltic Sea coasts.

The Federal Republic of Germany has entrusted the German Maritime Search and Rescue Service (DGzRS) with this public service mission. We are responsible for conducting, directing, and coordinating all search and rescue operations. To this end, we operate the German Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Bremen.
In international terminology, our mission is referred to as a SAR operation. SAR stands for Search and Rescue. This globally standardized abbreviation clearly identifies the assets of the organization responsible in each country. That is why the three letters SAR are also displayed on the bow of all our rescue vessels.
We carry out the mission we have chosen for ourselves independently and on our own responsibility. That is why we have made a conscious decision to forego any government or public funding. We do not accept taxpayer money; instead, we have always financed our entire work exclusively through donations and voluntary contributions.
